CD ROM DRIVES

CD-ROM drives that operate at the speed of a conventional audio CD player are called single – speed (Ix) drives. Advanced drives that spin twice, and three times as first as the typical CD player are referred to as double – speed (2x) drives, triple – speed (3x) drives, and so forth. Single –speed drives transfer data at a rate of 150KB per second. Double – speed drive
transfers occur at 300KB per second, and so on. Most manufactures are now focusing on 50x and 52x drives. CD Rom drives can play audio CDs. However, a CD player cannot produce any output from the CD –Rom disk.
CDs are classified by a color–coding system that corresponds to their intended use.

CDs that contain digital data intended for use in a computer are referred to as yellow book CDs – Rom book. CDs refer to those formatted to contain digital music. Orange book refers to the standard form CDs that are used in worm drives. Green Book CDs are used with interactive CD systems, and Blue Book CDs are those associated with caser- disc system.
