SOME INTERNET TERMS AND ACRONYMS
INTERNET: International Network
E-MAIL: Electronic Mail
ID: stands for Identification. This is
the column where one will be asked to enter your personal ID before you can use
the E-mail software. This ID could be your name, numbers, alphabet,
alphanumeric etc, where no two people can have the same ID.
PASSWORD: This is the secret number or letters
which is known by the user alone. This password gives you access to open your
E-mail box, only you for security purpose should know this password.
CHATTING: Chatting via net allows people who
are on the computer network simultaneously to hold live interactive
conversation. One can only chat one on one conversation when one happens to
sign in at the same time.
One who has business to discuss, could fix a time and date,
then go to the net and have a heart to heart discussion.
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF CHATTING. These are:

Online
chatting.

Offline
chatting.
ONLINE CHATTING: These are messages which one can send to other person at a time when
both the sender and the receiver are both logged on to the internet.
OFFLINE CHATTING: These are messages sent to other person at a time when the receiver is
not logged on to the internet. Chatting is a good interactive section, because
you can be online with as many people you choose to chart with at the same
time, from all over the world. Nowadays, one could see each other while
chatting with help of web cam.
CYBER CAFÉ:
It is places where a number of personal computers connected to the internet are
made available for use by customers at a price. A cybercafé is known as
internet café.
CYBER
SPACE: This term is used to describe internet network and the WWW.
DOWNLOAD:
This is the process of retrieving information from the internet onto a personal
computer. A user can download files, music, software or games onto a personal
computer.
UPLOAD: This
term refers to the process of transmitting a file from a local computer onto
the internet. It is the opposite of downloading.
WWW: It in
an acronym for World Wide Web. WWW or W3 commonly known as the web, is a system
of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the internet
HTML:
HTML is a short hyper text markup language. It is a computer language with some
sets of makeup symbols and codes that are used for building websites.
HTTP: HTTP
stands for hyper text transfer protocol. It is the protocol for transferring
WebPages in the web.
SMTP: It
simply means Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. SMTP is an internet standard for
electronic mail (E-Mail) transmission across internet protocol (IP) networks.
PROTOCOL: It
is a standard or set of rules by which computers communicate over the network.
ISP
{INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER}: Is a company that provides individuals and
companies access to the internet. Examples of ISPs in Nigeria are; link server limited,
cobra net limited, swift networks limited etc.
