OPERATING SYSTEM



OPERATING SYSTEM
This is software responsible for controlling the allocation and usage of hardware resources in the computer system. It is a program that allows the computer to function and also allow the user to interact with the computer. It is the first program that must be load into the computer memory before application software can be run. It is the program which serves as a link between the computer and its user. Operating system is an example of system software.

FUNCTIONS OF OPERATING SYSTEM
1.     It allows the user to create files, store file, run and link program
2.     It also allows the user to access printer and other peripherals.


EXAMPLES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
·  P.C. DOS(personal operating system)
·  MS DOS(Microsoft disk operating system)
·  Windows 95, 97, 98, 2000, XP professional,  window vista, window 7, window 8 etc
·  Unix
·  Linux
·  Novell
·  Xenin etc.

TYPES OF OPERATING SYSTEM
1.     Graphical user interface eg Ms window, linux etc
2.     Command based operating system eg Ms dos, unix etc
3.     Single user operating system eg Ms dos etc
4.     Multi user operating system eg windows, unix, xenin etc
5.     Network operating system eg windows NT,windows server.
                                                     
HOW TO START COMPUTER
1.     Power on the electric terminal
2.     Switch on the UPS or stabilizer if your computer is connected to any.
3.     Press the power button at the rear view of the system unit and that of the monitor.
NOTE: After pressing the power button, the computer will undergo a booting process i.e. loading your command into the computer memory and preparing your operating system for use.
  Wait patiently until it completes its task.


BOOTING
This is the process of starting the operating system.
TYPES OF BOOTING
There are two types of booting, namely:
·        Cold booting
·        Warm booting

1.  COLD BOOTING: This is the first process of loading system. This start immediately the computer is switched on. It gives the system the opportunity for checking the possible errors before it finally gets to the desktop environment.
2.   WARM BOOTING: This occurs when the system refuses command. Then, you choose CTRL + ALT + DELETE to restart the computer or during the process of shutting down the computer, you choose restart instead of shutting down the dialog box.

HOW TO TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
1.     Save any file you want to save
2.     close all open programs on the task bar
3.     click on shut down
4.     Shutdown dialog box appear or turn off computer click ok
5.     A message displays, it is now safe to turn off your computer.
6.     Now power the monitor off by pressing the power button in front of the monitor.

REASONS FOR SHUTTING DOWN:
1.     To protect the hard disk from damage
2.     To avoid damaging other components of the computer system
3.     To obey the proper rule of closing the system so that the system will last longer.
