DISADVANTAGES OF INTERNET IN THE SOCIETY

Problems of internet are:

Security, pornography, friendship, fraud and crime

1.     SECURITY: The internet is a highway that carries a great deal of personal and organization. To business, electronic link tend to be exposed to attack from both thieves and vandals.

         Computer hackers would steal password and use them to break into a company’s database or security. Because of inadequate security, business transactions have been very effective and attractive through internet. Crackers may break into the systems database of banks, firms, industries and cyber cafés to manipulate their account, database file, just for the fun of it.

2.     PORNOGRAPHY: Pornography is a major problem in Nigeria. Most adolescents and teenagers go to the cyber café without their parent’s knowledge to watch pornographic pictures or movies.

           The invention of internet has exposed teenagers and youths to pornographic films. A child who his /her parent restricts from watching pornographic films could go to the internet and log on to website where he/she would watch pornographic films which are not encouraging for their health. Pornographic films are not advisable for teenagers and adolescents.

3.     FRIENDSHIP: Most youths go to the net, log onto chat with someone he/she doesn’t know. Sometimes men from American and European countries would tell a girl to undress her blouse or shirt for him to have a look, while he pays the girl. This girl thinking it’s easy. These men most of the times use the pictures for cover pages, or picture in magazine, thereby exposing our young ones to the public.

             Young boys and girls like to make friends through net and also having in mind to get in touch with the person. One even goes ahead dating the person, which is not encouraging for youths. So many young men and women have lost their partners or loved ones through chatting in the internet.

4.      FRAUD AND CRIME: Most youth who are jobless and are not ready to engage themselves in useful things, they wakeup go to the cyber café and defraud individuals, organizations and even government.

             Computer hackers steal through the internet. They may decide to break a cyber café billing, and they will browse for as long as they wish to. They could also hack into banks that have loose security and defraud them. Computer crackers, crack into systems, banks, industries and organization media houses and take vital information about the companies or firms. Most of the times, crackers do this for the fun of it.
